A dossier of 6 translation homework assignments (circa 250 words each) to be presented at the end of Semester 2.

Module Overview
This module enables students to progress from comprehension of source-language texts to translation into English. At the end of the module students will have the basis for further professional development in the chosen language.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites
TRAM 400 Ab initio Language for Translation Purposes I or documented equivalent.
Module Aims
This module aims to provide students with the relevant competences as well as the confidence to tackle translations from the new language into English, working with general-purpose texts in the first instance and progressing to semi-specialised texts from a limited selection of subject fields).  Currently the languages on offer are Greek, Norwegian and Swedish.  One or two will be offered each year subject to staff availability.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will:
·         be able to translate from the new language into English in an adequate way—as the basis for further professional development—a range of authentic texts, both general and semi-technical (from a limited selection of subject fields);
·         be able to identify, analyse and solve problems when translating from the new language into English, including developing strategies for dealing with unfamiliar words and structures in the context of reading comprehension for translation;
·         be able to identify and locate available reference material for both the new language and English in order to solve translation problems;
·         be able to build on the knowledge and skills gained in order to reach a professional standard of translation through further self-study.
Module Content
In this module, students will start translating authentic texts (and text extracts) of increasing difficulty and specialisation. The emphasis will be on those aspects of grammar which are particularly relevant to the comprehension of written texts from more formal registers, including phrase, clause and sentence structures, as well as on the structure of words, including compounds.
Methods of Teaching/Learning
Seminars, including some group work as well as whole class work dealing with the translation of texts as well as some further grammar sessions.  A translation of circa 250 words will be set for homework every week. The best 6 will be presented as part of the overall mark at the end of the semester. In order to progress to an appropriate level, students are required to study privately on an intensive basis, as well as handing in homework every week.
