Module Overview
This module provides students with the chance to study a new language from scratch, providing the basis for the development of translation skills in a new language pair (always with English). It is particularly useful for students with only one foreign language who wish to add to their portfolio of translation languages. At the end of the module students will be ready to start translating selected texts from Greek, Norwegian or Swedish into English.

Module Aims
This module aims to give students a working knowledge of the written form of a new language for comprehension purposes as the basis for the development of translation skills (see TRAM 401). Currently the languages available are Greek, Norwegian and Swedish. One or two will be offered each year subject to staff availability.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will:
·         be able to use the general vocabulary and relevant grammar in the source language for reading comprehension purposes;
·         be able to write short passages in the target language using correct grammar;
·         be able to tackle new texts for comprehension purposes with confidence.
Module Content
The module will develop students’ knowledge of the basic elements of the source language, focussing on the comprehension of the written form: grammar and vocabulary, including idioms.
 
Some short authentic passages will be included to introduce students a feel to the relevant culture.
Methods of Teaching/Learning
Seminars with exercises building on explanations and illustrations, including some group as well as whole-class work. Further exercises in vocabulary, grammar and comprehension will be set on a regular basis for homework. In order to progress to an appropriate level, students are expected to study privately on an intensive basis with the guidance of the tutor.
