Module Aims |
To enable students to build on their previous experience of translating from Spanish to English, both in L2 modules and through placement experience. To develop students’ understanding of issues involved in text production and practical ability in translation between Spanish and English |

Learning Outcomes |
On successful completion of this module, students will:
- have acquired a deeper understanding of the processes involved in translation;
- be able to translate complex linguistic passages of Spanish into accurate and appropriate English;
- be able to analyse translation difficulties, using concepts and terminology from the theory of translation;
- have improved competence in using specialist dictionaries and other aids to translation;
- demonstrate cultural awareness in interpretation and creation of texts;
- demonstrate creativity in text production;
- confidently use strategies to solve translation problems;
- have greatly improved communication skills, both orally and in writing.

Module Content |
- Practical translation work on texts from Spanish into English in a variety of genres. Texts will be contemporary and will cover a wide range of issues, and will be taken from a variety of sources.
- Students will prepare translations outside class, in order to receive feedback and improve their translation skills.
- Discussion and analysis of translation difficulties and strategies for resolving them.

Methods of Teaching/Learning |
Teaching will be delivered in practical seminars. There will be opportunities for class discussion, group work and peer evaluation. Further guidance for independent study will be provided by the class tutor. |

Selected Texts/Journals |
- Passages for translation, practice and assignments will be supplied by the module tutor.
- A good bilingual dictionary (e.g. Oxford, Collins), together with a monolingual Spanish dictionary and a monolingual English dictionary (e.g. Collins, Collins Cobuild English Language Dictionary, Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English).
