Module Overview
This is a Level 2 module, taught in Semester 1, with two contact hours per teaching week. Attendance is compulsory.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites
Successful completion of HE1 or equivalent.
Module Aims
This module aims to introduce students to the subtitling of audiovisual material such as films and TV programmes for foreign-language audiences, placing it in the context of interlingual translation generally but also emphasising its distinctive characteristics as intermodal (sound-image-speech).
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
  • demonstrate knowledge of the general principles of screen translation and, in particular, subtitling;
  • show an understanding of the importance of translation theory to screen translation;
  • show an awareness of the practical constraints involved in subtitling through completion of hands-on tasks;
  • demonstrate a critical awareness of interlingual subtitling practice.
Module Content
The following areas are indicative of topics to be covered:
 
  • Introduction to screen translation and the three stages involved in subtitling.
  • The spatio-temporal constraints of subtitling.
  • Spotting.
  • Integration of the visual and audio elements.
  • Spoken language in written form.
  • Editing/condensing text.
  • Application of translation theory to subtitling.
  • Evaluation of subtitled productions in the target language.
Methods of Teaching/Learning
2 hours per week for one semester. Interactive language seminars (in English) including practical tasks.
