Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will:

  • Be aware of and understand major models and concepts of translation quality assessment
  • Have shown the ability to apply one or more of these models to a detailed analysis of the translation process and product
  • Have developed analytical, evaluation and revision skills, skills that are transferable to other modules in their course and to their future employment in the translation world.

  • Basic issues of translation analysis, evaluation, revision and quality assessment
  • Functional models
  • Register-based models
  • Discourse-based models
  • Use of electronic corpora in translation quality assessment
  • Practical revision of texts
  • Quality assurance in professional translation and project management
  • Think-aloud protocol analysis as a means of cognitive assessment
  • Evaluating student translations
  • Analysis of translation in reviews of literary translation
Methods of Teaching/Learning
Two hours per week for one semester.

Lecture and seminar format, including student presentations; directed private study and research; prescribed reading and directed analysis of translation material.The readings will be based on English and lesson materials will focus on translating into or from English, so they will be accessible to students of varied language backgrounds.
