Module Overview |
This is a Level 1 module. It is taught in the Autumn semester, two contact hours per teaching week. Attendance is compulsory. |

Prerequisites/Co-requisites |
A level or equivalent in one foreign language plus a high level of English. |

Module Aims |
The module aims to introduce the student to the wide range of resources on which translators and interpreters need to call in researching and solving translation and interpreting problems |

Learning Outcomes |
On successful completion of the module, students will:
- Have acquired an awareness of the broad range of resources on which translators and interpreters draw.
- Have developed problem-solving skills.
- Be able to search for and locate appropriate resources.
- Be able to match resources with problem types.
- Be able to evaluate and compare resources.
- Be able to use resources appropriately when preparing translations.

Module Content |
The following areas are indicative of topics to be covered:
- Discussion of a range of resources, how to find and use them, for example:
- Dictionaries
- electronic resources
- Parallel texts
- Interpreting - ‘brief’ ; how to prepare; scenarios
- ‘Active consumer of linguistic surroundings’
- Practice in use of appropriate resources for applied translation.

Methods of Teaching/Learning |
Teaching will be delivered in practical seminars. There will be opportunities for class discussion, group work and peer evaluation. Further guidance for independent study will be provided by the class tutor. |
