Module Overview
This module offers an overview of the areas of translation studies and interpreting studies. It is divided into two parts: the first part covers topics relating to the different types of audiovisual translation (dubbing, interlingual subtitling) and interpreting (consecutive/simultaneous interpreting, court interpreting, public service interpreting etc.); the second part focuses on interlingual ‘paper’ translation.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites
GCE A/AS level or equivalent in one foreign language plus a high level of English.
Module Aims
This module is designed to provide a basic foundation for translation and interpreting studies and serves as an introduction for students from across the language spectrum.
Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

  • have a knowledge and understanding of some of the main theoretical concepts, processes and terminology of translation, audiovisual translation and interpreting;
  • have a knowledge of the technical, linguistic, cultural and institutional issues pertaining to different types of translating;
  • be able to apply such concepts and terminology to the analysis of existing ST-TT translation pairs;
  • be aware of and able to comment on some main structural and lexical differences between language pairs; 
  • be aware of and able to comment on some main and typical characteristics of ‘translationese’
Module Content
  • Introduction to some main theoretical concepts, processes and terminology of translation, audiovisual translation and interpreting;
  • Practice in applying such concepts and terminology to the analysis of examples;
  • Contrastive analysis of parallel texts and translated texts to identify some key differences between language pairs and examples of ‘translationese’;
  • Practical introduction to and awareness of basic terminology of translation criticism using non-specialized texts from a range of languages into or out of English;
Methods of Teaching/Learning
2 hours per week for one semester, 20-24 class contact hours over the semester. Weekly lecture followed by practical work on audiovisual translation, interpreting and translation exercises.

Passages for analysis and translation will be supplied by the course lecturer.
