• Presentation: a class presentation of 20-25 minutes on the topic of the Literature Review (5%)

Technical Project: a Technical Project of guide length 10,000 to 15,000 words on a chosen topic that is different from the topic of the Literature Review - 70%

A mark of at least 40% in each Unit of Assessment is required to pass the module.
Module Overview
The module includes two aspects. The Literature Review is intended to give you experience in writing a literature review on a technical topic, the feedback on which will assist you in writing the Technical Project. In addition, it will give you an opportunity to learn in detail about a specialised area of audio engineering not normally covered in the remainder of the programme, and to present this to the rest of the year so that your colleagues learn from your findings. The Technical Project will give you an opportunity to conduct research in a subject of your choosing to a depth not possible during other parts of the programme.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites

Module Aims
• To introduce you to the methods of academic research.
• To increase your knowledge of a specialised area of audio engineering.
• To increase your skills in academic writing.
• To help you gain confidence in presenting your ideas to other people.
• To enable you to conduct research on a technical topic of your choosing.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this module you should be able to:

• Collate and discuss this research in a coherent form in a written literature review.
• Clearly communicate a summary of your research in the form of a presentation.
• Demonstrate your ability to search the published literature to obtain relevant references.
• Demonstrate significant scholarship in the area of your chosen subject.
• Write a technical report in an academically satisfactory yet readable way.
• Demonstrate your propensity for postgraduate study.

Transferable Skills:
• Transferrable subject knowledge
• Research skills
• Self-directed learning
• Presentation skills
• Problem solving
Module Content
The content of your Literature Review will be agreed between you and the module co-ordinator at the plenary sessions held during semester 1.

The content of your Technical Project will be agreed between you and the module co-ordinator by the end of Week 8 of Semester 1.

The following topics will be covered in lectures:
• Research methods
• Technical writing skills
• Presentation skills
Methods of Teaching/Learning
• Five two-hour lectures at the beginning of Semester 1.
• Eight three-hour seminars in Semester 2 during which you will give a presentation on your Literature Review topic.
• Coursework assignments and feedback.
• Tutorial supervision for the technical project will be provided by one of the academic staff from the IoSR. The quantity and frequency of such sessions will be determined by you and your supervisor. Whilst a certain minimum of contact time is expected — an average of about half an hour per fortnight — it is recognised that the amount of supervision necessary will vary from person to person.
• Because attendance at this module is compulsory, up to three marks may be deducted from your Audio Research Seminar coursework mark for each absence (or late arrival or early leaving) from the lectures and seminars. It is your responsibility to ensure that you sign the attendance register and to provide suitable evidence if you are absent for medical reasons.
