Module Overview
This is a Level 3 module, taught in Semester2, with two contact hours per teaching week. Attendance is compulsory.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites
Successful completion of Spanish modules at HE2 or equivalent.
Module Aims
To increase students’ understanding of the processes involved in translating from English to Spanish, and to develop practical ability in translation, including ability to use relevant translation resources.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will:
 
  • recognise a wide range of common problems involved in translating between Spanish and English;
  • understand and be able to use strategies for dealing with these difficulties;
  • be able to use a bilingual dictionary and other translation tools effectively;
  • be able to translate complex passages of English into accurate Spanish, using appropriate style and register;
  • have gained deeper insight into cultural differences, and demonstrate greater cultural awareness;
  • have refined their problem-solving skills and increased creativity;
  • be able to analyse target texts and critically evaluate their own texts.
Module Content
  • Practical translation work on a range of texts from Spanish into English. Texts will be contemporary and will cover a wide range of issues, and will be taken from a variety of sources.
  • Students will prepare translations outside class, in order to receive feedback and improve their translation skills.
  • Discussion and analysis of translation difficulties and strategies for resolving them.
Methods of Teaching/Learning
Teaching will be delivered in practical seminars. There will be opportunities for class discussion, group work and peer evaluation.   Further guidance for independent study will be provided by the class tutor.

  • Passages for translation, practice and assignments will be supplied by the module tutor.
  • A good bilingual dictionary (Oxford Collins).
