Module Overview
This is a Level 3 module for Spanish. It is taught in Spanish, in semester 1, two contact hours per teaching week. Attendance is compulsory.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites
Successful completion of HE2 Spanish modules or equivalent
Module Aims
  • To develop knowledge and understanding of how the Spanish language and other languages of Spain have evolved and are currently evolving, in a sociolinguistic perspective.
  • To increase knowledge and understanding of the different ways in which the Spanish language has developed around the world.
  • To develop knowledge of situations of language contact between Spanish and other languages around the Spanish-speaking world.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will:
  • understand how and why Spanish became the language of Spain and parts of America;
  • know how and why the other languages of Spain have developed differently;
  • be able to use sociolinguistic terms to describe and discuss the languages of Spain and America;
  • Know how Spanish became a world language and understand the processes involved.
  • Have acquired knowledge about the historical and contemporary impact of Spanish language and culture around the world.
  • Have gained a general understanding of various sociolinguistic phenomena in a variety of specific geographical and cultural contexts.
  • be able to undertake independent research into related areas and present their ideas in written form, using a range of sources; 
  • be able to undertake independent research and present their ideas in an oral presentation.
Module Content
The following areas are indicative of topics to be covered:
 
  • Development of the Spanish language.
  • Development of other languages of Spain and America.
  • Overview of language contact situations between Spanish and other languages.
  • The Spanish-speaking world today – individual cases of language contact.
Methods of Teaching/Learning
Two contact hours per teaching week in Autumn semester. The module is taught entirely in Spanish, and student participation will be essential. Learning will occur through note-taking in lectures, background reading and preparation of and participation in class discussions.
