Module Overview |
This module meets the career needs of today’s students of Hospitality, Retail and Tourism (HRT). It offers the opportunity to learn a basic language skill, obtain a basic vocabulary which will be of use in a future career abroad and acquire insights into the foreign culture. |

No previous knowledge of Spanish required. |

Module Aims |
· To develop basic communicative competence at beginners’ level in the four language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening)
· To instil a basic proficiency in handling basic grammatical structures
· To provide students with basic generic and HRT-specific vocabulary
· To give some insight into socio-cultural issues relevant to the country in question |

Module Content |
The following areas are indicative of topics to be covered:
The module entails the use of all four skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing).
Topic areas
· Social introductions
· Personal details (age, family, nationality, profession, basic physical description and character)
· Counting, spelling, addresses, phone numbers, days, months and time
· Expressing likes and dislikes, hobbies and daily routine
· Basic transactions (shopping, café, buying tickets)
· Writing messages and postcards
Grammar
- Pronunciation, spelling, numbers
- Present tense (regular and key irregular)
- Introduction to immediate future; preterite tense (basic key verbs)
- Reflexive verbs; ser/estar; hay/tener
- Nouns (plurals/gender); definite and indefinite article; interrogatives
- Basic negation
- Personal pronouns (subject)
- Adjectives (agreement, possessives, demonstratives)
Students are encouraged to self-asses their progress and to map their linguistic competence against the descriptors of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). |

Methods of Teaching/Learning |
The teaching and learning methods include three hours of language seminars per week plus one hour of online work. The course will be taught communicatively, with emphasis on training in listening and speaking by means of group work, such as role play and presentation in the language. Teaching will be in the target language as far as possible, and material drawn from a variety of sources, including audiovisual and online content. Consolidation of learning will be achieved through the practice of language skills inside and outside the classroom, including computer-assisted language learning. The development of independent learning strategies, research skills and transferable skills is supported by the use of learning technology. |
