Module Overview |
This is a Level 1 intensive Spanish module for ab initio students. It is taught in a combination of English and Spanish, over the Autumn semester, six contact hours per teaching week. Attendance is compulsory. |

No previous knowledge of Spanish is required. |

Module Aims |
To develop the student’s Spanish linguistic skills to enable them to participate and communicate effectively in a limited range of contexts. |

Learning Outcomes |
On completion of this module, students will
- Interact in Spanish in a range of familiar situations
- Understand and interpret spoken and written Spanish in a limited range of situations and topics
- Be able to categorise a limited range of text types
- Be able to paraphrase and summarize spoken and written information at a lower intermediate level
- Be able to organise and present ideas in predictable topics
- Demonstrate the ability to retrieve and handle information from appropriate sources
- Be able to understand and use the grammatical terminology relating to the topics covered
- Be able to demonstrate a degree of grammatical accuracy in their use of Spanish
- Be able to pronounce individual sounds of Spanish with a degree of accuracy
- Be able to use language reference materials such as grammars and dictionaries

Module Content |
The following areas are indicative of topics to be covered:
- Collecting and selecting information
- Analysis of different written and spoken texts
- Structuring spoken and written texts
- Taking notes and summarising information from spoken and written texts
- Expressing opinions in written and spoken contexts
- The grammar of spoken and written Spanish including grammatical terminology in Spanish
- Listening comprehension of familiar topics
- Strategies for effective listening and reading in Spanish
- Cohesion and coherence
- Avoiding plagiarism – in-text and bibliographic referencing
- Effective use of reference materials (e.g. grammar books, dictionaries, other reference works)
- A degree of awareness and use of appropriate register and style

Methods of Teaching/Learning |
Teaching will be delivered in a combination of lectures, seminars and workshops. There will be opportunities for class discussion, group work and peer evaluation. Further guidance for independent study will be provided by the class tutor. There will be opportunities for formative feedback on a practice discussion and from written and spoken tasks set as homework. |
