Module Overview |
This is a Level 1 module for Spanish. It is taught in the target language, over the Autumn semester, three contact hours per teaching week. Attendance is compulsory. |

Module Aims |
To develop the linguistic skills to enable the students to participate and communicate effectively in a range of academic contexts. |

Learning Outcomes |
On completion of this module, students will be able to
- Interact confidently and with some degree of fluency and appropriateness in Spanish in a range of academic situations
- understand and interpret spoken and written Spanish in a range of academic situations and on a range of topics
- categorise and analyse a range of text types using critical and evaluative thinking
- paraphrase and summarize spoken and written information
- organise and present ideas within the framework of a structured and reasoned argument
- retrieve and use information from appropriate sources
- understand and use the grammatical terminology relating to the topics covered
- demonstrate a good degree of grammatical accuracy in their use of basic Spanish grammar
- demonstrate a good degree of accuracy in their pronunciation of individual sounds of Spanish
- use language reference materials such as grammars and specialised dictionaries

- Collecting and selecting information
- Analysis of different written and spoken texts
- Structuring spoken and written texts
- Taking notes and summarising information from spoken and written texts
- Expressing opinions in written and spoken contexts
- The grammar of spoken and written Spanish
- Grammatical terminology in Spanish
- Listening comprehension
- Strategies for effective listening and reading in Spanish
- Cohesion and coherence
- Avoiding plagiarism – in-text and bibliographic referencing
- Effective use of reference materials (e.g. grammar books, dictionaries, other reference works)

Methods of Teaching/Learning |
Teaching will be delivered in a combination of lectures, seminars and workshops. There will be opportunities for class discussion, group work and peer evaluation. Further guidance for independent study will be provided by the class tutor. There will be opportunities for formative feedback on a practice discussion and from written and spoken tasks set as homework. |
