This is a level 1 module for Spanish. It is taught in the target language, over Autumn and Spring semesters, one contact hour per teaching week. Attendance is compulsory.

A level Spanish or equivalent

The module aims at consolidating students' knowledge of Spanish grammar. It identifies areas of particular concern within an academic environment and encourages students to analyse and use appropriate morphological and syntactical structures. The main aim is to improve accuracy and flexibility in the target language. The module also encourages independent learning and student self-assessment.

On successful completion of the module, students will:

• have gained a better understanding of how languages are structured, including their first language;
• be able to understand and use the grammatical terminology related to the topics covered;
• have improved grammatical accuracy in Spanish;
• have acquired a high level of knowledge of the grammatical and pragmatic conventions of language use which are required for establishing communication and understanding in an academic or professional context;
• be able to use language reference materials such as grammars and specialised dictionaries effectively;
• be able to recognise and eliminate first language interference.

Grammatical forms and functions are revised and consolidated, and grammatical terminology is introduced. A number of areas of grammar will be covered, typically to include the following:

Spanish morphological analysis

Agreement;
Verbs: conjugations, moods, tenses, irregularities;
Pronouns;
Connectors

Spanish syntactical analysis

Subordination
Use of the subjunctive
Relative clauses

Teaching will be in small groups. The module is taught largely in the target language. Students will work in pairs and groups to analyse linguistic structures and prepare short presentations of their findings. Self- and peer-assessment will be used to foster students' analytical and critical skills and to develop language learning strategies.
