In order to achieve the threshold standard for the award of credits for this module, the student must meet the following criteria related to the learning outcomes described above:
 
At a post-beginners level
Listening – understand and respond successfully to gist and detail of extracts on predictable topics.
Speaking – take part in a conversation on predictable topics and give a short presentation in the target language.
Reading – understand and respond successfully to gist and detail of simple on predictable topics.
Writing – Write messages and short letters on predictable topics.

The assessment strategy is designed to demonstrate the students’ achievement of the learning outcomes by setting oral and written tasks and tests. The assessment will be formative and summative.
 
The assessment methods include ongoing assessment by the tutor, taking into account the students’ contributions to class and oral work as well as their fulfilment of weekly homework tasks, which will comprise 50% of the mark, and an end-of-module test, also 50%, comprising a writing, reading, listening, oral and grammar element.
 
Module Overview
This module meets the career needs of today’s students of Management Studies for the Service Sector. It offers the opportunity to broaden their basic language skills, obtain a working vocabulary which will be of use in a future career abroad and acquire insights into the foreign culture.

Prerequisites/Co-requisites
GCSE grade C or below OR equivalent (100h study) OR phase 1 Spanish
Module Aims
  • To develop communicative competence at a post-beginners level, approximately equivalent to A1/A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference.
  • To instil proficiency in handling a range of grammatical structures.
  • To develop further socio-cultural issues relevant to the country in question.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the students will be able to:
  • understand the gist and detail of short extracts in the spoken language in a limited range of situations;
  • interact orally and respond with confidence in predictable situations;
  • understand the gist and detail of language written on familiar topics;
  • write short pieces using a limited range of vocabulary and structures.
The study of the language will enable students to:
-          develop skills in managing their own learning by means of tasks requiring autonomous study
-          solve problems, by means of classroom and homework tasks requiring analytical and evaluative thinking
-          present and communicate information, by means of individual, pair and group work in class

Grammar
  • Consolidation of present tense (regular + irregular verbs) and immediate future. Perfect tense
  • Preterite (regular + basic irregulars);
  • Present continuous tense
  • Imperative (tú/vosotros)
  • Adverbs (basic); prepositions; object pronouns
  • Consolidation of adjectives
Methods of Teaching/Learning
The teaching and learning strategy is designed to promote the development of the four language skills (speaking, writing, reading and listening), grammar and vocabulary, the acquisition of knowledge of the foreign culture and knowledge of the particular language associated with the students’ specialism.
 
The teaching and learning methods include three hours of language classes per week which will be taught communicatively incorporating individual presentations and pair and group work. Teaching will be in the target language as far as possible, and material drawn from a variety of sources, including audio and video tapes, will be exploited. Consolidation of learning will be by the practice of language skills inside and outside the classroom, using a variety of means, including computer-assisted language learning. Students are encouraged to self-assess their level using the CEFR descriptors.
