Module Overview

This module will explore the formation of racial and ethnic identities within the context of cultures of racism in the West. The module will examine theoretical approaches to the study of racisms, the constitution of everyday cultures of racism and extreme racist politics associated with far right movements. The module will also consider the meaning and value of anti-racism and the possibility for post-racial identities.

Module Aims

·         To provide an overview of the role and significance of racism in contemporary societies

 

·         To introduce students to sociological approaches to the study of racisms

 

  • To provide students with a critical awareness of the reproduction of racism within Western societies
Learning Outcomes

Students completing this module will:

 

  • Be familiar with and critically engage with sociological approaches to the study of race, ethnicity and racism

     

  • Understand the way in which race, ethnicity and racism interacts with other social divisions and inequalities

     

  • Be able to connect empirical studies with theoretical approaches to the study of racism

     

  • Develop a critical awareness of multicultural and anti-racist values
