Module Overview

This module investigates the state institution of ‘the police’ and its relationship to the diverse set of social ordering practices labelled as ‘policing’. It will cover both the history and work of the police as an agency of modern nation states and also look at the variety of ways in which policing has been and is currently enacted

Learning Outcomes

On completing the module students should:

 

 

- Be familiar with the key academic research findings about the role, functions and performance of the police;

 

 

- Understand the relationship between policing and the production and reproduction of social order;

 

 

- Be informed about the history of the police and its contemporary
            development.

  • Policing and social control before the development of the modern ‘police’.

     

  • Histories of the British police.

     

  • What are the police for and what do they do.

     

  • The organization of the police in the and internationally. 

     

  • The investigation and detection of crime.

     

  • Community policing and policing neighbourhoods.
