Module Content |
The first part of the module presents the development of organizational theory from early in the century to today. Each week we will discuss a case study of an organization. The goal is to enrich your understanding of both organizational theory and real life organizations. In this part of the module, we will consider case studies from various organisational types (for-profit, non-profit) and industries (e.g. retail, manufacturing, or education, in addition to cultural industries). Here, the module is designed to draw upon your experiences from your Placement, if you took one, or other work experience.
The second part of the module looks more specifically at cultural organisations and industries, defined broadly as ranging from art galleries to software firms. We will examine such issues as creativity, artistic freedom and profits, cultural industries and the quality of content, the production of culture, careers in the cultural industries, the non-profit form and funding of non-profit cultural organisations, cultural policy and government efforts to bolster the creative economy.
