Module Overview
This module introduces students to the contemporary debates in the sociology of race, ethnicity and racism. Historical material, social theories and cross-cultural ethnographic studies will be used to illustrate the social construction of race and ethnicity and the reproduction of racial power in western societies.

Module Aims
Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should:

  • Critically understand sociological approaches to the study of race, ethnicity, racism, migration, post-colonialism and identity formation
  • Will understand the way in which race, ethnicity and racism interacts with other social divisions and inequalities
  • Be familiar with empirical studies of race and ethnicity and be able to connect them with the major theoretical issues in this field
  • Will develop a critical awareness of multicultural and anti-racist values.
Module Content

The module will draw upon a wide range of theoretical and empirical studies covering: 

  • The historical formation of race, ethnicity and racism - from nineteenth century science of race to the so-called ‘new’ cultural racism;
  • Theoretical perspectives – cultural studies, post-colonial theory, black and white feminist epistemologies, racism as discourse, structure and process;
  • Race, ethnicity and the state – nationalism, citizenship, refugees and asylum seekers;
  • The migration process – class, gender and religion;
  • Cultural politics: Rastafarianism, the new Asian dance music and other contemporary musical forms;
  • Cultural identities - white ethnicity, inter-racial identities and trans-national adoption;
  • Race and politics - Europe and far right politics, anti-racism;
  • Race, spaces and boundaries - the rural, the urban;
  • Race, nature and culture - the ‘new’ genetic technologies
