Module Overview

This course will examine the culturally and socially varied meanings attached to being female or male in contemporary society and the outcome of being assigned to one or the other gender within concrete social practices. The use of historical, contemporary and cross-cultural material, alongside an international perspective, will highlight the processes of change and development in the position of women and men in society.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module students should:

 

1) Have a critical understanding of a wide range of theoretical perspectives, which seek to explain the social construction and organisation of gender.

 

2 Will understand the way in which gender interacts with other social divisions.

 

3) Have gained a theoretical and empirical understanding of the social organisation of gender relations within a global context.

 

 
Module Content

Sex, gender, theory and difference

 

Topics covered include: historical overview of the position of women and men in society, the conceptualisation of femininity and masculinity; feminist theory, theorising masculinity, and gender and other social divisions.

The social organisation of gender relations

 

Topics covered include: childhood, education and training, relationships, love and romance, the family, marriage and parenthood, work, globalisation, religion, and cultural representations of women and men.

Social control, power and resistance           

 

Topics covered include: violence against women, political representations of men women and men, the women’s movement and global politics.
