Assessment Pattern

Portfolio of workshop reports (100%). The activities consist of small research projects that will be carried out in groups of students. Activities will mainly be carried out during workshops, but some work outside class may be needed to complete the task. Each student will be required to submit a portfolio of short reports on the activities, as specified in handouts given out during the workshop.

 

 

Module Overview

This module aims to provide an overview of the key methodological approaches to the study of media. This will entail a focus upon the application of traditional sociological methods to the study of media (e.g. surveys, interviews, observation) as well as an emphasis on approaches specific to media research.

At the end of the module, you should be able to:

 

·         Understand the basic practicalities of different approaches to media research.

 

·         Recognise the links between methodological approaches and particular traditions or bodies of media research.

 

·         Critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to media research in relation to case studies.

 

·         Carry out small-scale media research projects.

Module Content
Methods of Teaching/Learning

Following the initial one hour introduction the module will consist of one hour of lecture and one hour of workshop per week, with a final one hour review session.  During the workshops, groups of students will carry out small projects together to practice the methods discussed in lectures
