Module Overview |
Social policy is the study of society’s response to social need. This module takes an historical approach and examines both theoretical and practical aspects of social policy and social welfare. It aims to increase students’ awareness of the conceptual foundations of political interventions in welfare programmes and to explore the relationships between different areas of welfare provision.

Module Aims |
During the course of the module the following key subjects will be considered:
· The development of the state’s role in welfare.
· The development of and contemporary policies including: education; health; housing; criminal justice; social services; and, pensions.
· Themes in social policy including: gender and ethnicity.

Module Content |
Students on the module will obtain an understanding of:
1. The key issues and perspectives relevant to the study of social policy.
2. The role and nature of the central welfare institutions in society.
3. Comparative and historical patterns in social policy.
4. How social policy is situated in a broader social context, and the ways in which social life impacts upon and is impacted upon by various forms of social policy intervention.
