| Module Overview |
This module provides a brief practical introduction to both the use of information and communications technologies for the kinds of tasks likely to be encountered during degree study, and the cultivation of good study skills more widely. A significant focus of the module is on the development of practical skills and knowledge with respect to the use of computers in the sociological enterprise. The module is taught entirely through class sessions in workshops, with a specific focus on practical exercises.
This module aims to inform students about academic expectations with respect to study, and aims to encourage the development of good study habits.

| Learning Outcomes |
|
Having completed the module, students will:
- Have the skills needed to take notes, read and write critically, and produce essay-based coursework in line with academic conventions on referencing and plagiarism
- Use the University Computing Service to prepare essays with a word processor, use the library catalogue effectively, locate electronic journals, access information and use bibliographic databases on the world wide web, and evaluate web resources and reference them correctly.
- Be able to send and receive emails, use the University Computing Service Virtual Learning Environment, and be able to work with spreadsheets and to use software to prepare presentations.

- Logging in, organizing files, using email, printing, WWW, introduction to the library, introduction to the ‘Ulearn’ VLE
- Introducing study skills: Lecture notes, lecture and tutorial preparation, critical academic reading and notetaking, critical essay writing, conventions of referencing, plagiarism.
- Wordprocessing, use of Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint,
- Evaluating and referencing internet resources, searching electronic bibliographic databases, using journals and electronic journals, locating and using online sociology resources.
