Module Overview

This module provides a sociological understanding of contemporary societies through examination of structure, change and everyday life of citizens.  Attention is focused on topics such as social differentiation; the nature and implications of demographic trends; ethnicity and racism; the mass media; deviance and social control; women and work; environmental issues as social problems; and globalisation.

 

 

Sociology of Contemporary Societies will address these and other issues by presenting empirical research drawn mainly from studies undertaken in Europe with a particular focus on the in a European context.

Learning Outcomes

Having completed this module the student should:

 

1.     Be able to describe key aspects of social differentiation in contemporary societies

 

2.     Be able to outline major areas of social change and their specific areas of social impact

 

3.     Be familiar with the specific contemporary social issues

 

4.     Understand the structural and individual experiences of inequalities

 

 

Module Content
Methods of Teaching/Learning

A fortnightly tutorial complements this lecture course. Discussions are based on set reading or written work.  During tutorials, titles for essays are discussed and written work submitted by students is returned and discussed.  Emphasis is placed on providing clear feedback to students.
