Module Aims

This module aims to provide students with knowledge and skills in the area of the treatment and management of sexual offending, and to introduce students to the range of sexual offending patterns and their impact from predominantly psychological theoretical perspectives.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the module, you will be able to:
•    have an awareness of the research literature in sexual offending risk factors and their interaction with various forms of mental disorder.
•    have an understanding of the issues involved in needs-led assessment and treatment of sexual offenders.
•    have an understanding of the development and operation of evaluation of sex offender treatment programmes for reducing sex offending behaviour.

Please note that the course aims to familiarise students with processes that may include assessment techniques.  It is not a formal training in these tools and techniques and is not intended to provide professional competence in these areas. 
Module Content

The course comprises of 8 two-hour lectures and a one-day workshop.  The first session provides an overview and introduction to the area and sets the scene for the remaining sessions. Subsequent sessions focus on specific manifestations of violence and issues related to the treatment and sexual offender including:
Sex Offending Theory & Practice
Prison Service Sex Offender Treatment Programmes
Deviant sexual arousal and fantasy assessment and treatment
Community treatment programmes for sex offenders
Polygraph: Uses and implications in Forensic Psychology
The role of the Internet in sex offending
Treatment of Sex Offenders with Personality Disorder
Women sex offenders
Sex offender practice familiarisation workshop (6 hours)
