4) Case study -3000 words [70% weighting]

Students must achieve 40% in each component of assessment.
Module Overview
This module will consider key social psychological issues relating to conflict between individuals and groups. The role of anger will be considered in cognitive and cultural terms. The potential for violence is explored through topics like self control and obedience. We also consider how person perception is influenced by roles. Intergroup conflict is considered in terms of the historical development of social psychology and emergence of Social Identity Theory. Finally strategies for empathy, negotiation and conflict reduction are considered.

Module Aims
This course will explore how social psychology has responded to concerns about both interpersonal and intergroup conflict. We aim to consider a diverse range of influential journal articles and understand them in the context of the development of social psychological theory.
Learning Outcomes
Students will have an understanding of how social psychological theories were developed, the questions they can address and the potential for future research. Whilst considering some methodological issues there will be a strong emphasis on both historical and contemporary application. Students will be expected to develop an in-depth understanding of at least one conflict situation (group or individual) and be able to critically apply research findings to this situation.

Methods of Teaching/Learning
Weekly seminars with discussion based on set readings.
