All level 2 psychology modules.
Module Aims
To understand the behavioural impact of drugs and hormones upon the brain.
Learning Outcomes
Students will have a general understanding of the main monoamine neurotransmitter systems and hormones roles in modulating human behaviour. Students will learn to integrate information from varying streams of research at different levels of neuroscience (molecular to cognitive) and psychology which address similar issues.
Module Content
To include :
Neurotransmitter systems & the drugs (clinical and non-clinical) that interact with them.
Neurotransmitters systems and how they influence behaviour.
Depression, schizophrenia, ADHD, PTSD & eating disorders from a psychopharmacological perspective.
The sex hormones and how they influence behaviour.
Methods of Teaching/Learning
Mixed method approach utilizing straight lectures and more interactive group-work sessions. i.e., Groups will be given a number of abstracts on a single issue from highly valid research methods (electrophysiology / genetic / psychology) and learn to extract key information to rapidly form a coherent picture of current knowledge in a given area of research.
