Module Overview |
This course aims to equip students with an advanced knowledge and critical understanding of the research that has been conducted into children’s and adolescents’ understanding, attitudes, feelings and behaviour in relationship to race, ethnicity and nation. The course covers the principal research
methods which have been employed by researchers in this field, the principal findings of the empirical research which has been conducted, and the theoretical fra
meworks which have been proposed in order to explain these empirical findings. |

Module Aims |
This course aims to equip students with an advanced knowledge and critical understanding of the research that has been conducted into children's and adolescents' understanding, attitudes, feelings and behaviour in relationship to race, ethnicity and nation. The course covers the principal research methods which have been employed by researchers in this field, the principal findings of the empirical research which has been conducted, and the theoretical frameworks which have been proposed in order to explain these empirical findings. |

Module Content |
Week 1: An introduction to the principal themes of the course: the concepts of race, ethnicity, nation and state.
Week 2: The development of racial and ethnic attitudes in childhood.
Week 3: Racial and ethnic identifications and acculturation in adolescence.
Week 4: Identifications and cultural practices of children and adolescents of mixed-heritage.
Week 5: Children’s and adolescents’ understanding of countries.
Week 6: The development of national identifications and national attitudes.
Week 7: Children’s and adolescents’ political understanding of the state.
Week 8: The development of active citizenship in childhood and adolescence.
Week 9: The development of intercultural competences and intercultural citizenship.
Week 10: Children, race, ethnicity and nation: an overview and a synthesis of the principal themes of the course. |
