| Module Overview |
This module introduces a range of concepts used in social-scientific examination of relationships within and between social groups, which consider themselves distinctive. It demonstrates the continuing importance of ethnicity, national identity, nationalism and their intersection with the politics of migration and integration as sources of tension or conflict in Europe. It considers nationalism as a response and an impediment to international developments — including the integration of the European Union — which are tending to erode the autonomy of the nation state. |

| Module Aims |
- To introduce a range of concepts used in social-scientific examination of relationships within and between social groups, which consider themselves distinctive.
- To illustrate the use of these concepts in case studies which demonstrate the continuing importance of ethnicity, national identity, nationalism and the politics of migration as sources of tension or conflict in Europe.
To consider nationalism as a response and an impediment to international developments — including the integration of the European Union — which are tending to erode the autonomy of the nation state. |

By the end of this module, students should be able to:

- understand and apply the relevant concepts;
- compare national cases;
- analyse complex relationships between historical, political, economic and cultural factors in the causation and regulation of ethnic conflicts;
- consider the possible implications of the politics of nationalism, ethnicity and migration for the future development of the European Union.

- gather, organise and deploy evidence, data and information from a variety of secondary and some primary sources;
- construct reasoned argument, synthesize relevant information and exercise critical judgement;
- analyse and synthesise a wide range of material in different formats;
- apply theoretical frameworks to policy/empirical analysis.
