An assignment report is required approximately 3000 words in length, excluding appendices, references and bibliography. The report is in two parts; one part is intended to test the student’s ability to explain to a management audience specified scientific and/or technical principles, the other is based on a scenario and is intended to test the student’s ability to carry out a risk assessment and identify suitable control measures.

Module Aims

The aim of this module is to provide the student with knowledge and understanding of the risks and control measures associated with work equipment, the workplace and associated factors.
Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module the student will be able to: 

1.       Assess the risks and identify suitable control measures for:
a)       the safe use of machinery including computer controlled machinery and robots;
b)       the safe use of lifting equipment;
c)       the safe use of workplace transport;
d)       fire and explosion;
e)       construction activities; and
f)         work in confined spaces.
 
2.       Know and understand:
a)       the requirements for the safe use of electricity;
b)       the concept of component and system reliability; and
c)       the principles of material science.
 
3.       Advise management on the requirements of the following legislation, including Approved Codes of Practice and Guidance Notes:
a)       the Provision and use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998;
b)       the Lifting and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998;
c)       the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 1992;
d)       the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989;
e)       the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000;
f)         the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations) 1992;
g)       the Construction (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1996;
h)       the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994;
i)         the Work in Confined Spaces Regulations 1997;
j)         the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997, as amended; and the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002
