Module Overview
Prerequisites/Co-requisites

None

Module Aims

To provide a stand-alone introduction to occupational hygiene involving airborne (particulate, vapour, gas) and liquid hazards, and to enable the student to carry out a risk assessment according to the requirements of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 (as amended) and the Approved Code of Practice and Guidance.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module students will be able to;

a)
Recognise hazards in the working environment which arise from the use of chemical compounds and mixtures, micro-organisms and allergens
b)       Understand the factors contributing or leading to the exposure of employees to toxic materials/micro-organisms or allergens.
c)       Assess the health risks associated with the use of hazardous substances
d)       Understand the methods of assessing, measuring and quantifying exposure to substances in the workplace
e)       Understand the role of sampling strategies and of quality assurance systems
f)         Understand the principles of workplace environmental control and environmental quality control in relation to airborne contaminants and hazardous substances
g)       Develop occupational hygiene programmes and survey check lists
h)       Identify relevant sources of information and guidance
i)         Understand how to conduct an audit of a health and safety system
j)         Conduct and write a report on a COSHH assessment in a workplace

 Cognitive Skills

  •  Critically analyse and evaluate the impact of chemicals on health within a work environment.
  • Evaluate the validity of research based studies.
  • Analyse and interpret data which influences decision making of protection strategies to be adopted

    Key Skills

  • Appreciates and utilises the contribution of the multi-disciplinary team in problem solving
  •  Is able to critically analyse research and apply finding to practice
  • Can perform as an independent and self critical learner, identifying own requirements for continuing professional development.

Practical Skills

  • Evaluate and utilise a range of equipment for sampling substances to determine exposure in the workplace.
  • Critically analyse the methodologies for effectively auditing health and safety systems.
  • Identify and evaluate complex problems using relevant knowledge and skills to formulate a problem solving approach.
