Working with CYP
Module Aims
The aim of this module is to enable the participants to explore the concepts, research and practice in the field of children and young people’s social relationships.
Learning Outcomes
• Critically evaluate the concept of the whole school approach
• Discuss the nature of emotional health and well being in children and young people (CYP) and the positive and negative outcomes for CYP of poor interpersonal relationships such as bullying.
• Debate the concept of an emotionally literate school.
• Develop the skills and knowledge to help to empower CYP to take action against school bullying.
• Be able to undertake and critically evaluate a needs analysis and identify areas that need to change and outline how that change may be facilitated.
• Critically evaluate how the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the module will impact on the student’s area of practice and how their practice could be improved.
Module Content
Key themes to be explored in this module include:
• The value of the whole school approach in developing and sustaining children and young people’s (CYP) emotional health and well being.
• The importance of children and young people’s relationships in social development.
• What happens when relationships go wrong: bullying and exclusion from the peer group.
• The nature of bullying.
• Preparing for change: involving the whole school and its community.
• Conducting a needs analysis
• Consulting with children and young people
• Creating an emotionally literate school community.
Methods of Teaching/Learning
30 hours on-line study supported by 6 x 1.5 hour sessions in the virtual environment Second Life.
