Assessment Pattern
This consists of an audio recording of an assessment (or patient consultation) following the course. On the basis of the audio recording the student will reflect on their use of communication skills and how these skills have developed since attending the course. Students should demonstrate the application of theory to practice (2,500 words) (100%)


Assignment preparation:
1. Make an audio recording of a patient assessment or consultation in your clinical area with the consent of a patient. The audio recording should take no longer than10-15 minutes
2. Transcribe and reflect on the audio recording and identify the communication strategies you use during the interaction
3. Use research evidence to support your discussion in relation to your use of communication skills.
4. Critically reflect on your coverage of physical and psychosocial assessment.
5. Make recommendations for your future practice


Assessment criteria
• Provide a clear and focused reflection on the communication strategies and skills that you have used
• Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the principles and concepts that inform advanced communication skills
• In particular reflect on how you respond to the patient’s concerns
• Present a logical argument and justify recommendations with the best evidence available

Module Aims

To reflect on the effectiveness of communication skills and to elicit and respond to patient’s problems, worries and concerns.
Learning Outcomes
On completing this module the student should be able to:

Subject Knowledge and Understanding
• Make clear links between the theory and practice of communication, and explore the evidence base for effective communication skills
• Interpret, critique and utilize relevant research information related to communication

• Evaluate communication strategies and interventions, in a variety of formats including spoken and written communication
• Demonstrate critical thinking, problem solving and reflective capacities essential for complex professional relationships
• Evaluate own communication abilities, recognizing strengths and areas for development

Practical Skills
• Demonstrate skill in facilitating patient’s expression of their concerns
• Give constructive feedback to participants during experiential learning
• Utilise effective communication skills when building rapport
