A structured reflective portfolio of evidence demonstrating the specialist learning outcomes: The reflective aspects must comprise of one 750 word reflection on your learning during the orthopaedic and trauma nursing module and a structured reflection of 200 words on each of five visits in order to demonstrate deeper understanding of all aspects of Orthopaedic and Trauma nursing care. (total = 1750 words)

Module Aims |
The aim of this module is to enable students to apply knowledge and understanding of the musculo-skeletal system, orthopaedic and trauma conditions and injury to the holistic care of patients. |

Learning Outcomes |
On completing this module the student should be able to:
Subject knowledge and understanding • demonstrate knowledge and understanding to manage and develop contemporary practice within the specialist area of orthopaedic and trauma practice • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of contemporary policy and practice developments in the field of orthopaedic and trauma practice
Cognitive skills • use appropriate and relevant evidence in assessment, implementation and evaluation of care • demonstrate the ability to evaluate practice • evaluate and develop their professional knowledge and skills through ongoing reflection in and on practice.
Practical skills • practice independently and accountably as a comfort enhancer within practitioner’s area of practice. • act as a partner and guide by integrating comprehensive patient assessment and interpretative skills in supporting patients. • co-ordinate a plan of care to achieve optimal patient outcome and consider implications for discharge. • recognise and risk manage complications of clinical conditions. • manage technical and therapeutic interventions and regimes to achieve optimal patient care.

Aetiology, pathology, pathophysiology and epidemiology of the musculoskeletal conditions and injury Trauma patient assessment and management Pain assessment and management Wound assessment and management Management of the patient with Intra-medullary nailing Management of external fixation, plasters and splints Interdisciplinary holistic assessment and goal setting Patient and family/carer partnership working Safe discharge and referral issues including life adaptations Risk assessment
