An observed structured practice assessment (OSPA). (Pass/Refer)

Written assignment for SCPHN students
Identify a population within your area of practice. Drawing on varying levels and sources of data construct a profile of the area and analyse the collated information to identify the health needs of the population. Identify an area of health need that you would like to address and provide a rationale for this choice.

Module Aims
It is intended that the module will provide the practitioner with the necessary evidence based knowledge and skills to assess individual, family, community and population health needs in a public health context and raise awareness of health need
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the student should be able to::

Subject Knowledge and Understanding

• demonstrate understanding of the processes of health surveillance and assessment of a populations health and well being
• Assess the resources needed for the implementation and evaluation of public health developments at local and national levels.
• Analyse and evaluate concepts and theories related to individual, multi disciplinary and multi agency assessment
• Establish client involvement, choice and advocacy in the assessment process
• Appreciate quality of communication with individuals, groups and communities
• Collate, analyse and interpret data relating to health and well being of an identified population
• Work collaboratively with individuals, groups and communities to enhance health and well being
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of bio-psychosocial factors in group and community assessment
• Understand the legal and ethical frameworks that guide practice

Cognitive/intellectual skills

• Evaluate the evidence and research base of new approaches to client / patient and / or community assessment
• Analyse and evaluate contemporary issues in public health or social care using an appropriate evidence base
• Utilise reflective ability essential for effective assessment

Practical Skills

• Demonstrate implementation of appropriate tools of public health assessment
• Appraise and disseminate appropriate and relevant evidence in the assessment, implementation and evaluation and audit of services in a range of settings
• Effectively utilise, in public health practice, assessment skills related to the implementation of selected therapeutic interventions and preventative interventions
• Conduct safe and effective first-contact public health nursing assessments and demonstrate appropriate decision making about management of patient’s problems
• Demonstrate safe application of appropriate tools and / or technological equipment.
• Engage with a community development approach in supporting and empowering service users and communities to be active participants in development
• Undertake diagnostic health screening and health surveillance to contribute to strategies that promote and improve health and prevent disease in individuals, groups and communities and assess the health gain of interventions

Key Transferable skills

• Demonstrate skills related to information and communication technology in the retrieval and analysis of data
• Engage in effective communication within a multi-professional health & social care team following the assessment process and decisions made in public health practice
• Demonstrate and utilise accurate and effective report writing skills and effectively manage information gained through the assessment process.

Assessment:
Principles, models and theories, single assessment process, information gathering, holistic needs assessment, risk assessment, community needs assessment.

Evidence base:
Biosocial perspective, legal and ethical frameworks, sources, research and audit

Skills development:
Individual and family public health assessment, history taking, drawing conclusions, care implementation

Evaluation:
Outcome, impact and process, caseload evaluation, stakeholder impact of policies, effectiveness of assessment strategies
