Module Aims
The module will introduce students to research in the context of health care with a key focus on pre-hospital care, including the different research methodologies, the concept of evidence-based practice and critical appraisal.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to:

Knowledge and understanding
1. develop an understanding of research and audit in the context of health care, particularly in the pre-hospital setting
2 develop an understanding of the need for a high quality evidence-base, underpinning practice, including how research findings influence development of clinical guidelines for paramedics
3. identify the key ethical principles and governance requirements when planning or participating in research in a health care setting
4. demonstrate a basic awareness of statistics
5. describe the ‘hierarchy’ of levels evidence and how these influence decision making

Cognitive skills
1. demonstrate awareness of the module content and how the knowledge gained may be applied in future practice
2. recognise the necessity to use findings from high quality, ethical research to inform practice
3. distinguish between research, audit and service improvement

Key skills
1. develop appraisal skills to improve patient care
1. retrieve information from a range of resources and interpret it using a problem solving approach
