Assessment Pattern
The assessment for this module will be in two parts:

An essay that discusses a child nursing intervention, exploring and critiquing the evidence base for the intervention. The essay should include the quality of the evidence, leadership and management issues e.g. change management, legal and ethical issues and personal and professional development. 3,000 words. 80%

A presentation to student peers and child health teachers that demonstrates the learning that has occurred through the elective experience.

Module Aims
This module will enable the student to analyse policy and management issues in relation to child health and to analyse and enhance their own contribution to care and that of others. The aim of the elective period in this module is to provide an opportunity for the student to develop personally and professionally and enable them to further develop their ability to identify and meet their own learning needs by studying in depth an aspect of child nursing. It is intended that the student will enhance their research skills in relation to evidence based practice and practice development and develop an understanding of the legal and ethical parameters of their practice.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to:

Values and attitudes
1. demonstrate an awareness of ethical dilemmas which influence clinical decision making and delivery of care
2. appreciate the importance of political awareness in the enhancement of inter-professional and inter-agency working
3. develop skills in professional collaborative working, leadership and management

Knowledge and understanding
1. review policy and management issues affecting child health.
2. analyse and evaluate service provision in relation to client need and policy requirements at local and national levels
3. identify international factors influencing child health.
4. discuss legal aspects of policy regulation and associated ethical issues.
5. critically analyse the concept of evidence-based practice in relation to their own practice.
6. evaluate the effectiveness of personal development plans as a means to increase performance
7. demonstrate and understanding of the concept of practice development
8. discuss different leadership styles and their impact on effective teamwork and care delivery.

Cognitive skills
1. utilize the concept of evidence based practice in relation to their own practice
2. critically review factors that influence contemporary health and social care policy development and delivery.
3. understand the relevant agendas and develop appropriate strategies for practice development
4. utilize and evaluate strategies designed to empower children, young people and their families to influence and use available services
5. discuss the complexity arising from legal and ethical dilemmas and their impact on decision-making.
