Assessment Pattern
The module will be assessed through the compilation of a portfolio of practice evidence demonstrating attainment of the module learning outcomes.

The portfolio may be one or a combination of the following:

Formal presentation (100%)
Competency based assessments & Record of Supervised practice (marked on a pass/fail basis)

Both parts of the assessment must be passed. If one part is failed only that part needs to be resubmitted

Module Aims
This module has been designed to assist individuals, working within a Trust, to develop work-based skills with the aim of delivering high quality and effective wound care within a community care setting.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the student should be able to:

Subject knowledge and understanding

Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of wound healing and assessment.
Demonstrate an understanding of aetiology and physiology relating to the skin.
Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the aetiology and treatment of venous and arterial ulcers.
Involve patients in the planning and delivery of their care.
Have an understanding of the principles and implications infection control within the community setting.


Cognitive skills

Consider the effectiveness treatments following patient assessments.
Able to reflect on care decisions.
Demonstrate evidence-based knowledge in practice.

Practice skills

Demonstrate holistic wound assessment
Demonstrate ability to provide patient care in a safe an effective manner
Demonstrate ability to use compression bandaging in an appropriate and safe manner.
Work effectively within the multi-disciplinary team. Referring and seeking advice in an appropriate and timely manner.
Act always in a manner that demonstrates awareness of the legal and professional responsibilities of the nurse in relation to wound care.




Key/transferable skills

Demonstrate ability to:

Empower self and others to make effective wound care decisions and develop skills in wound care management.

Principles of wound cleansing and infections
Principles of wound healing
Types of wounds and assessment
Wound assessment tools and mapping
Applying 4-layer bandaging- why,how, when?
Pressure ulcer prevention and care
Diabetic wound care
Documentation and accountability in relation to wound care
Practical experience around compression bandaging Introduction to presentation.
Methods of Teaching/Learning
This module will be part of the WBL modules in learning through professional practice and therefore be delivered purely through work-based learning. It is facilitated by the Trusts Tissue Viability leads and by the PDF lead. To enhance the process of learning, a variety of approaches may be adopted:
