Assessment Pattern
A case study that explores the psychological and sociological factors influencing the diverse needs of the child and family in the UK. Within this piece the student will need to identify the skills needed by the children’s nurse to meet the needs of the child and family. 2,500 words

Module Aims
This module will assist the students in gaining an understanding of the diverse needs of children and families in contemporary UK society. Psychological, biological and sociological theoretical underpinning will enable students to contextualise care within a wide range of care environments. Skill development for the student in communication, negotiation, teaching and learning will be enhanced whilst an understanding of the evidence base needed to inform children’s nursing will be developed.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to:

Knowledge and understanding
1. describe the significance of caring for children in a range of health care settings
2. describe the key legislation, which has influenced children’s nursing within contemporary society
3. demonstrate knowledge of contemporary legal and ethical issues that impact on the health and welfare of children
4. enable the students to make links between theory and practice
5. discuss the judgements and decisions based on available evidence and known best practice in relation to multi-professional working
6. begin to develop an evidence based understanding for teaching child and families
7. acknowledge boundaries of a professional caring relationship
8. recognise the range of tools used to assess the health and mental health status of children, demonstrating an understanding of how to evaluate assessment tools
9. discuss how the need for a child to be protected can be recognised and managed, with specific reference to professional communication
10. demonstrate the key factors that are detrimental to the well-being of children and young people and the impact of these factors on child health nursing
11. outline the principles of the safe administration of medicines
12. identify the main medicines, contra-indications and dosages of medicines commonly used in child nursing environments

Cognitive skills
1. recognise the significance of research-based evidence for child health nursing to ensure safe outcomes.
2. understand the concept and implications of family centred care.
3. develop skills in the process of reflection and self-awareness.

Key skills
1. communicate and listen effectively with children, families, health care professionals and other pertinent organisations.
2. develop self-awareness, and consider how ones interpersonal interactions influence care.
3. retrieve information and data relating to child health and welfare, especially in relation to maintenance of client/ patient records.
4. demonstrate proficiency in information retrieval, interpreting data.
5. begin to identify and prioritise child and family care issues.
6. demonstrate the use of the internet as an information resource in identifying best practice.

Delivery:
The module will be delivered using a variety of teaching and learning methods including core lectures, seminars and discussions, group work, role play, enquiry based learning, reflective practice and directed reading.

Module Content
What is a family? Child development. Attachment and bonding. Philosophies of children’s nursing, family centred care, history of childhood / personhood. Concepts of well-being. Protecting children, communication, care needs across the health / illness continuum to include physical and mental health. Working as a children’s nurse in contemporary UK. Interprofessional working. Introduction to policy development. Public health. What is evidence based practice, and how do we use it? Management of medicines. Biological underpinning of care, including nutrition.

Linking Theory to Practice
As advised within all taught sessions, you need to consider the theory learned and apply this to the practice you experience. Regularly discuss with your mentor your understanding of how the theory applies to practice to ensure you are making these links.
