Module Aims
The aims of the module are to:
Explore the concepts of evaluation, monitoring and audit and examine ways these are related to delivery of health and social care services
Deepen the students’ understanding of research, its language, design method and methodology
Assist students to use databases for the evaluation and development of practice
To enable the student to develop the skills of critical appraisal in relation to research
Develop critical appraisal skills in relation to the management of information and information systems
Explore issues surrounding the management of change in the context of research
Learning Outcomes
Module Content
The academic content of the module concentrates on introducing students to the concept of professional knowledge and the nature of evidence required for practice. It also attempts to demystify the research process, whilst increasing their critical and evaluative skills.
Introduction to research in the practical setting
Introduction to the nature of knowledge
What is evidence? Accessing evidence
Qualitative research methods
Quantitative research methods
Introduction to statistics
Search strategy and skills for searching the literature
Critical reading and critiquing skills
Systematic reviews and meta-analysis
Ethical and political issues in research and evidence-based practice
Utilising critiquing frameworks to evaluate literature
Critiquing research, evidence and evaluating the evidence using the evidence for practice
Methods of Teaching/Learning
This module will run over 15 study days; each morning will consist of classroom activities, individual activities and opportunity to work on assignment preparation, as well as scheduled tutorial time
