Assessment Pattern
Three methods of assessment exist that will be selected by the specialist tutor and adapted to suit the area of study chosen:

• A 3000 word academic assignment
• A 20 minute reflective presentation of a client cared for relevant to the chosen area and a 500 word reflection regarding the presentation
• A structured reflective portfolio of evidence demonstrating the specialist learning outcomes

Module Aims
The aim of this module is to support flexible learning opportunities in order to develop independent learners who are able to address the complexities of modern health and social care policy and provision in an innovative manner.
Learning Outcomes
On completing this module the student should be able to:

Subject Knowledge and Understanding
• Identify learning needs and develop an individualised, self-directed program of learning through the use of a personal development plan

Cognitive/intellectual skills
• Evaluate and develop their professional knowledge through ongoing reflection in and on practice relevant to the chosen area
• Discuss the validity of the chosen topic area in relation to their professional practice

Practical Skills
• Demonstrate the ability to link theory to practice in relation to the chosen topic area in order to demonstrate an understanding of evidence based practice

Key transferable skills
• Discuss the socio-political climate impacting on the chosen area of study
Module Content
The academic content of the module concentrates on integrating theoretical and practical knowledge in order to enable the student to study an area of healthcare relevant to their professional role. The content will be negotiated between the student and the specialist tutor. Key themes to be covered in relation to the specific subject are:

Introduction to the module and assessment of learning needs
Applied bio/psycho/social aspects
Assessment tools
Management of patient/client care, safety and comfort
Effective communication skills
Reflection in and on practice
Evidence based practice
Risk assessment

Methods of Teaching/Learning
Overall Student Workload – 200 hours
