Assessment Pattern
The Return to Practice module is envisaged as a learning opportunity for practitioners returning to practice. It is hoped that the successful completion of the module will help students to recognise the value of continuing their studies, confident in the knowledge that they are able to produce academic work at the required standard.

The assessment of theory and practice will be through the development of a professional portfolio, which demonstrates the achievement of the outcomes identified by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Specific practice outcomes and proficiencies are identified and must all be passed.

Specific competencies will be assessed in the clinical area by the professional practice teacher. The student’s progress will be reviewed formatively after half of the required hours to discuss performance measured against the assessed competency framework.

The summative assessment comprises a completed portfolio including:
A reflective account demonstrating attainment of the specific learning outcomes for each pathway – 2,000 words (Level 1), 2,500 (Level 2). This element is graded and the pass mark is 40%.
Completion of practice proficiencies and 75-150 hours in practice demonstrated through the Practice Proficiency document. This element is awarded a Pass/Fail grade.

The portfolio should be submitted in an A4 ring bind folder; do not use individual plastic pockets for your work. The portfolio must be accompanied by the appropriate Assessment of Theory / Practice Feedback sheet for the portfolio to be marked.

NB: Failure of the module will result in the returnee’s application for re-registration being unsuccessful.
Module Overview
Prerequisites/Co-requisites
Module Aims
The module aims to offer a contemporary update in the professional, clinical and theoretical bases for nurses, specialist community public health nurses and midwives wishing to return to practice. This will enable practitioners to renew their registration and re-enter registered practice with the confidence that their skills are up-to-date and knowledge current. These practitioners will be able to contribute to clinical effectiveness through their capacity to deliver safe and effective standards of patient and client care.
Learning Outcomes
On completing the module the student should be able to:

Subject knowledge and understanding
• analyse the influence of health and social policy on the practice of nursing and midwifery.
• demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the current structure and organisation of care, nationally and locally.

Cognitive skills
• discuss the implications of the legislation, guidelines, codes of practice and policies relevant to the practice of nursing and midwifery.
• discuss current issues in nursing and midwifery education and practice.
• identify key elements and choose appropriate methods in the identification and assessment of need, design and implement care interventions and evaluate outcomes in all relevant areas of practice, including the effective delivery of appropriate emergency care.

Practical skills
• take responsibility for effective team working and develop effective professional working relationships in a multi-professional approach to those for whom they provide care.
• evaluate their own strengths and weaknesses, acknowledge limitations of proficiency and recognise the importance of maintaining and developing professional competence.

Key/transferable skills
• analyse and apply relevant literature and research to inform the practice of nursing and midwifery including that related to physical and social sciences
• select appropriate communication strategies and use them effectively and define the educational role in relation to the patient/client, relatives and colleagues.
• use reflective practice in the maintenance and development of professional competence.

Module Content
The needs of each student will be assessed and plans for study and clinical/practical experience structured to the individual’s requirements. This will be addressed within both the classroom and clinical environments.

The knowledge and skills required to achieve the module outcomes form the taught content, the format of which is 8 common core days and 4 specialist branch days.

In addition study skills and assertiveness skills are appropriate for inclusion in the module. A short study skills pack is offered prior to commencement of the module.
