Module Availability

Weekly two-hour seminars in Semester 1. Regular tutorials will be arranged throughout the semester with the Module Convenor and any other contributing lecturer.

Assessment Pattern

Assessment is by coursework (up to 8,000 words in total). Two assignments each worth 50% of the assessment will be set, the first to be completed during the first half of the semester, and a second to be submitted at the end of the module. The second will be externally moderated.

Module Aims

To study and practise a variety of analytical methods.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate:
  • A systematic understanding of the aims and objectives of the analytical methodologies studied.
  • An ability to analyze selected works using the methodologies studied.
  • A critical awareness of the role and function of the analytical methodologies studied within the wider current context of advanced theory and analysis, and musicology in general.
  • An ability to adapt existing methodologies to the requirements of differing musical and research contexts.
Module Content

The course will centre on the methods of Heinrich Schenker and their modification and extension by subsequent analysts.

Methods of Teaching/Learning
20 hours plus up to 10 hours of tutorials
270 hours of private study (300 hours in total for the module)

The lecturer will introduce key concepts, which will be explored through worked examples in class and presentations by students.
