Module Availability

Weekly two-hour seminars in semester 1. Regular tutorials will be arranged throughout the course with the Module Convenor or any other contributing lecturer.

Assessment Pattern

Assessment is by coursework (8,000 words in total) A short assignment (2,000 words; 25% of total marks) will be set early in the module. The main project (6,000 words; 75% of total marks, and externally moderated) will be due at the end of the module. The topics of the coursework items will be agreed in discussion with the Module Convenor.

Module Aims

To explore some of the main issues to emerge in the aesthetics of music in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module you should be able to:
  • understand the writings of major contributors to debates in aesthetics of music
  • understand music aesthetics in a broad cultural context
  • demonstrate sophisticated critical and literary skills
  • produce an extended critical investigation of an issue in music aesthetics
Module Content

Topics are flexible but are likely to include aesthetic concepts of Organicism, Genius, Music and Language, Nationalism, Realism, Symbolism, Decandence and the Avant-Garde.

Methods of Teaching/Learning
20 hours plus up to 10 hours of tutorials 270 hours of private study (300 hours in total for the module)
 
The lecturer will provide extensive background information and an overview of the subject in hand.  This may lead into class discussion or short, prepared presentations by students.
