Coursework 1: an essay of no more than 2,500 - 40%
Coursework 2: a 10-minute oral presentation - 20%
A two-hour examination - 40%

You will need a weighted aggregate mark of 40%.
Module Overview
The purpose of this module is to introduce you to the concepts of pluralism, intertextuality and postmodernism in Western music from 1900 to the present day. Repertoire will be studied alongside related theoretical texts.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites
A pass in one of the HE2 18th-, 19th-, or 20th/21st-Century Studies modules.
Module Aims
To develop awareness of, and the ability to critique, the representations of pluralist influences (e.g. popular music, the music of other cultures and the music of the distant past) within 20th and 21st-century Western music.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module you should be able to:

• Identify and discuss the musical techniques used by Western composers to integrate a wide variety of disparate influences.
• Discuss aspects of postmodern theory and practice in relation to music.
• Identify the musical and aesthetic justifications for the inclusion of quotations and stylistic references in particular works.

• The study of set works by a variety of 20th-century composers in musical-analytical and aesthetic terms.
• An introduction to postmodern theory and related concepts, ideas, literature and key figures.
