Performance with a larger ensemble (12 minutes maximum)* - 60%
Written assignment (2,000 words) - 25%
Management responsibilities, involved in running, rehearsing and performing with ensembles (eg librarian duties, personnel management etc) - 15%

Reassessment method
*Performance with large ensemble to be taken with piano in place of ensemble
Module Overview
This module helps you develop your skills as a conductor to a more advanced level, and gives you a sense of self-assurance when leading larger ensembles in rehearsals and performance. In addition to your assessed performance you will be required to perform at least once on an un-assessed basis.

Module Aims
To develop your skills as a conductor to a level which prepares you for working with relatively large ensembles
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module you should be able to:

• demonstrate a secure practical application of a physical, gestural technique for communicative conducting
• begin to read fluently and to interpret more complex orchestral scores
• prepare scores for rehearsal in a professional manner
• discuss some of the problems of running rehearsals, and have an awareness of how to solve them
• apply your skills to a wider range of scores than those actually studied
• exhibit greater self-confidence when dealing with other performers
• contribute successfully to the range of administrative functions involved in management of an ensemble, as appropriate to a conductor
• participate in informed discussion about a wide range of conducting issues

Study of beating patterns and how to move between complex changing metres
Detailed study of the essentials of harmonic, textural and formal analysis
Aural exploration of a range of different musical styles.
Shaping of musical structures through gesture.
Study of historical examples of conductors at work
