Assessment Pattern
Performance with small ensemble of set piece (10 minutes maximum)* - 60%
Written assignment (2,000 words) - 25%
Management responsibilities, involved in running, rehearsing and performing with ensembles(eg librarian duties, personnel management etc) - 15%

Reassessment method
*Performance with small ensemble to be taken with piano in place of ensemble

No more than four students will be allowed to take this module.
A mark of at least 60% in the HE2 conducting course, or equivalent in audition.
Interview/presentation with the Director of Conducting


Module Overview
This module helps you develop your skills as a conductor beyond the basic, and gives you a sense of self-assurance when leading other musicians in rehearsals and performance. In addition to your assessed performance you will be required to perform at least once on an unassessed basis.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites
Pre-requisite: Conducting module at HE2; or audition
Module Aims
To develop your skills as a conductor to a level which prepares you for working with relatively small groups of musicians.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module you should be able to:

• demonstrate a secure practical application of a physical, gestural technique for communicative conducting
• read fluently and interpret a simple ensemble score
• prepare such scores for rehearsal in a professional manner
• discuss some of the problems of running rehearsals, and have an awareness of how to solve them
• apply your skills to a range of music
• exhibit greater self-confidence when dealing with other performers
• contribute successfully to the range of administrative functions involved in management of an ensemble, as appropriate to a conductor
• participate in informed discussion about a wide range of conducting issues

Detailed study of the essentials of harmonic, textural and formal analysis
Aural exploration of a range of different musical styles.
Shaping of musical structures through gesture.
Study of historical examples of conductors at work.
