Assessment Pattern
Coursework 1: a short analytical exercise or critique - 15%
Coursework 2: an analysis of a Bach prelude or similar piece - 35%
Coursework 3: an analysis of the exposition of a Classical sonata - 50%

You will need a weighted aggregate mark of 40%.
Module Overview
The purpose of this module is to enable students to build advanced levels of knowledge of analytical methods applicable to music composed between c.1750 and 1800.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites
A pass in one of the HE2 18th-, 19th-, or 20th/21st-Century Studies modules.
Module Aims
• To develop an advanced level of understanding of selected analytical methods.
• To develop an advanced level of understanding of aspects of tonal and/or formal theory.
• To develop advanced skills in the application of analytical methods to music of the second half of the eighteenth century.
• To foster an advanced understanding of tonal styles of late eighteenth-century music.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module you should be able to:

• Write an essay deploying analytical techniques.
• Apply analytical techniques to a range of music from the second half of the eighteenth century.
• Critique secondary analytical literature on music of the period.

Module Content

• Introduction to the analytical methods and theories of Heinrich Schenker and/or of formal theorists.
• Demonstration of the application of such analytical methods to a series of musical case studies from the mid to late eighteenth century.
• Critical reading of recent analytical literature.

Methods of Teaching/Learning
Classes will be a mixture of formal presentations by the lecturer, group/individual work on analytical exercises and/or discussion of secondary literature.
