Module Aims
To develop detailed critical and analytical understanding of the music of Gustav Mahler and its surrounding cultural contexts
Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module you should be able to

  •  demonstrate critical understanding of the music and cultural contexts of Gustav Mahler

     

  •  analyse structural aspects of selected works

     

  • demonstrate understanding of performance issues relating to Mahler’s music

Module Content
Critical study of topics in the analytical and interpretative study of Mahler’s music, including structural deformation, harmonic and motivic techniques, song-symphony relation, literary and philosophical meanings, reception history, popular appropriation, interpretation in performance, compositional legacy
