Investigation of the music and culture of Gustav Mahler
Module Aims
To develop critical and analytical understanding of the music of Gustav Mahler and its surrounding cultural contexts
Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module you should be able to:


demonstrate critical understanding of the music of Gustav Mahler in terms of either structural analysis, performance issues, or cultural critique
Module Content
Critical study of topics in the analytical and interpretative study of Mahler’s music, including structural deformation, harmonic and motivic techniques, song-symphony relation, literary and philosophical meanings, reception history, popular appropriation, interpretation in performance, compositional legacy
Methods of Teaching/Learning
5 two-hour lectures (Week 1 and four others, the selection depending on the assignment option chosen; additional individual/group tutorials as required
